Top 15 Jerseys of all time

There have been many truly great and astonishingly terrible jerseys over the years. I have compiled 15 of the nicest of all time through fan opinion, expert analysis and my opinion. Some will be from international tournaments others from the league. Honorable mentions go out to the Real Madrid kit of the 1950’s, the Brazil kit of the 1970’s and this season’s Borussia Dortmund black out kit. The slightly more eccentric ones like Arsenal’s “Bruised Banana’’ or South Africa’s 1998 World Cup rugby shirt or the Holsten sponsored 1985-87 Tottenham kit also narrowly missed out on this list.

15. England 1990 (3rd)

A polo shirt esque England kit. The “Three Lions” drifted away from the usual white and red kits to make a great third kit. The multiple shapes the combine to make an eyecatching pattern. Umbro copied their trademark patterns onto the sleeves and collar. Everything in this shirt ties together to make a retro icon.

14. Argentina 2014 (Away)

You can never go wrong with blue and gold. Adidas deserves a shoutout for making each color so distinctive. The two different shades of navy blue bring a distinct energy out of the other, they also work together and make the gold crest and squad number stand out. The white shoulder stripes contrast from the dark theme present on the rest of the shirt. This shirt was only used in the most memorable game, a great shirt reserved for a great game.

13.Holland 1988

Everything about this shirt matches up faultlessly. The faded white lines form a peculiar pattern that stems from the center. A pair of simple crests that stand out from the rest of the shirt. The white shoulder lines and collar are the ideal finishing touch. Lastly it is the legends that wore this shirt to win Euro ‘88 that elevate this shirt to a legendary status. Van basten, Gullit, and Rijkaard finished as the top three in Ballon d’or voting in 1988 and won the euros in this classic dutch uniform.

12 .France 1982

Royal blue, white collar, timelessly iconic crests, this shirt has it all. The smart, faint stripes belong to the board room in a corporate office. The white shorts and red socks tie the kit up and diverts the colors. The french may not have won the tournament but they can certainly hold their head high with the magnificently designed masterpiece

11. Mexico 1998

A poor showing doesn’t mean a poor kit. The unexpectedly well executed, unique, aztec-looking design proved the Mexicans used an intimidation tactic to scare their opponents into next week.. Unfortunately the Aztec gods must have cursed the Mexicans instead, they were not even able to reach the last 16. On a serious note, the light green is used to preface the dark green traditional design. The collar and trim wraps it up by finishing the tricolored Mexican flag.

10. Romania 1994

The beauty of these kits is truel how well they match. The colors are displayed in bold and direct patterns. The two kits are so similar and are a swap of each other. Without doing something extra, the shirtmakers made a distinctive icon.

9. Croatia 1998

Red is the color of anger, The croatians must have been really angry heading into the 1998 World Cup. My favorite thing about this kit is that it isn't symmetrical, designers these days seem to stick to that and make kits look boring and generic. The logo and crest are in the center with the pattern on the shirt matching the one on the crest. The finish on the pattern is slightly of center. The finish on the collar and sleeves is simple and sublime.

8.Newcastle United 1993-1994

“The Entertainers” sported this kit in 1993 with their quick, exciting brand of football.

there's not much you can do with stripes, asics knew that, instead, they have highlighted the other parts of the kit. Whether it’s the image of tyne-side layer on the azure blue or the buttons or even the great players that wore this kit, this kit is amazing. Without doing something complicated, this hit the nail on the head.

7. AC Milan 1988-1989

Worn by such stars as Rijkaard, Van Basten and Gullit, this AC Milan shirt is the base for all other ones that have come after it. The collar and sleeves are just clean. Long, simple stipes paired with white shorts and squad number. What truly made this shirt generational talents that wore it. Van basten, Gullit, and Rijkaard finished as the top three in Ballon d’or voting in that year as well as winning Euro 88 in the summer prior the the season’s beginning. A truly timeless shirt design…

6. Colombia 1990

Not exceedingly flamboyant but especially sublime this colombia shirt is magnificent. This was so brilliant that Colombia designed the 2018 world cup kit after it too. A dark yellow shirt with red and blue. The short stripes are a center piece if this of this kit. The charm of this shirt is definitely enhanced by the crazy hair of Carlos Valderrama.

5. USA 1994

This kit is very well constructed, the color contrast and complementation is sublime. The first thing that we see with this kit are the stars, homage to the American flag. The stars are perfectly balanced because of the diagonal axis and the denim blue. The blue isn't too bold on the eyes and the stars don’t cover the whole shirt. Though it was a disappointing showing from the hosts, the jersey they sported became one of the nicest ever shirts in World Cup History. Lastly, the crest is much better than the current one.

4. Barcelona 1975-1976 (Away)

Plain and simple, Barcelona represent all of their colors whilst making it clear that this is an away kit. The slash has a beautiful deep Maroon and Blue. the cuffs top the kit of nicely. The long sleeves definitely make this nicer. Theres not alot to say here, nice colors, nice crest and a staple of iconic kit lists.

3. Man United 1994-1995 (Away)

Collar up or down this is a classic. A kit from the mid 1990 with the perfect blend of colors. Sharp would be happy with how much promotion they are getting, a real bargain. The blue may seem a little random but, it is such a good trimming of the sleeves. Black kits are not exceedingly common but Man Utd nailed this one.

2. Club América 1994-1996

Everything about this shirts screams unconventional, the central crest, the pattern and even being sponsored by Coca Cola. The Black, Red and Blue pattern sit upon the chest and shoulders. This shirt makes the players seem like hawk ready to fly towards the victory. The diamonds make it seem like a shock of energy is coming from the Club América crest.

1. West Germany 1990

The top spot of this list has to go to the 1990 West Germany jersey, this one is the one that springs to mind when you think about the most iconic and nicest jerseys. Worn by such players as Loather Matthaus and Jurgen Klinsmann this kit was the first one my planning sheet. Now this is how to do a kit, the flag is splashed across the front in an unorthodox manner. The change in line direction allows the shirts to show the flag without otherwise looking lame. The negative space breaks up the design, highlighting the directness of the pattern. The crest is plain and simple along side the original Adidas logo. To top it off Germany were able to take home the victory, at the European Championships.
