Olympiacos are linked with Riess Nelson

A report by Football London recently suggested that greek giants Olympics are currently interested in Arsenal youngster Riess Nelson and have been since last summer. The reigning Greek champions are believed to be attempting to line-up a season-long loan move this summer.

Nelson was part of the influx of English youngsters who found their feet in the Bundesliga, a couple of seasons ago. For Hoffenhiem, he was often considered a star man, scoring 7 goals. Recently he has suffered a bit of a dry spell back in North London. The 21-year-old hasn’t made any kind of appearance for the Arsenal first team since January 9th, and he’s only made a single appearance in a senior squad since that date. In the international stage, the effects of this lack of minutes can also be seen. Nelson was not called up for the U-21 Euros in March.

Mikel Arteta encouraged Nelson to go on loan over the summer, and again in January, however, the winger chose to stay on both occasions, hoping to earn his place. During an interview in January, Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta said “We ended up with a large squad at the end of the transfer market.” The competition for a spot only stiffened up with the summer arrival of Willian, the rise of Bukayo Saka and the January addition of Martin Ødgaard. Arteta continued to say that they had a dearth of options for Nelson. “We had a few plans in mind with Reiss. One of them was as well to send him on loan to get more minutes because of the competition we have upfront. “The reality is he has been really good in training. He wants to stay here. He wants to fight for his place.”

If Nelson wants his career to progress he needs to look for regular minutes to build his confidence. We have seen Nelson prosper abroad previously. Along with this, ex-teammate, Sokratis, is currently on the books of the greek club. Lastly, former Arsenal academy striker, Chuba Akpom also had a successful stint in Greece with PAOK. Either way, in Greece or not, Nelson likely needs a loan move to straighten a once-promising career.
