Daily Football Tid-bits: Barcelona Face Wage Bill Crisis, Possible Bankruptcy If Mismanaged
According to the Daily Mail, Barcelona have their backs against the wall and may face bankruptcy in early 2021, if they fail to temporarily cut wages by an insane 190 Million Euros by Thursday, November 5th. Talk between the club’s lawyers and players was held on Friday in order to find a solution to the issue. Barcelona’s income is expected to drop by 231 Million, this would lead to 80 percent of all of the club’s spendings being on salaries, This is extremely unsustainable. The club has made some questionable financial decisions over the past few seasons. Famously swapping, then 23 year-old, Arthur Melo, for a like-minded, 30 year-old Miralem Pjanić from Juventus. They have also spent a combined 385 Million Euros on underperforming players like Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann. The Covid-19 pandemic amplified the negative effects of these decisions, leaving them, in many ways, with more damage to clean up than their European counterparts. The good news is that the Barca squad were willing to work a solution out, deeming Friday's meeting a success. Pay cuts are the most likely solution, players will still receive the same amount of money, just over a longer period. The club has now put this into practice with Gerrard Pique, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Frenkie De Jong and Clement Lenglet, other squad members are likely to follow suit. Hopefully, with Josep Bartomeu’s resignation on Tuesday, this terrible period of mismanagement will come to a close.
